AC Repair & Troubleshooting In Austin

When your AC stops cooling, starts making strange noises, leaks water, or simply isn't keeping your home comfortable, the first step is figuring out why. Bluebonnet A/C repairs all major HVAC brands and specializes in troubleshooting problems that aren't always as straightforward as they first appear.

Why Isn’t My AC Cooling?

Your AC can be running without actually keeping your home comfortable. It may be blowing warm air, producing less airflow than usual, running almost constantly, or cooling some rooms better than others. Sometimes the problem is with the air conditioner itself; other times, airflow, ductwork, controls, or conditions in the home are contributing to the problem.

The symptoms are the starting point—not the diagnosis. We troubleshoot the system to find out what is actually preventing it from cooling properly before recommending a repair.

Common AC Problems And Repairs

Not every cooling problem has the same cause. Depending on what we find during diagnosis, common AC repairs can include:

  • Electrical and control failures. Capacitors, contactors, relays, wiring, and other electrical components can prevent equipment from starting or operating correctly.

  • Blower and condenser fan problems. Motor or fan problems can reduce airflow, stop heat transfer, or shut the system down entirely.

  • Refrigerant problems. Low refrigerant can indicate a leak that needs to be located and evaluated rather than simply adding refrigerant.

  • Frozen evaporator coils. Icing can be related to airflow, refrigerant, or other system problems, so the cause matters.

  • Dirty or restricted coils. Buildup on indoor or outdoor coils can interfere with heat transfer and system performance.

  • Drainage and condensate problems. Clogged drains and related components can cause water problems or trigger safety switches that shut the system down.

What looks like the same symptom can have several different causes, which is why we diagnose the problem before deciding what needs to be repaired.

Broken Thermostat? Look For Pooling Water. Here’s Why.

If your thermostat suddenly goes blank, the thermostat itself may not be the problem. Many Austin AC systems have a safety switch designed to shut the system down when condensate water backs up. A clogged drain line can trigger that switch, leaving you with a blank thermostat—and often water pooling around the indoor unit.

If you see both, don't assume you need a new thermostat. Clearing the condensate problem and determining why the drain backed up may be all that's needed to get the system running again.

Don’t think you have a float switch? Give us a call, and we can install one for you. A functioning float switch helps protect your home from costly damage caused by condensate overflows.

How Do I Keep My AC System Running Its Best?

Routine HVAC maintenance can help catch developing problems before they turn into repairs, keep condensate drains clear, and make sure your system is operating the way it should. Regular maintenance also gives us a chance to identify changes in airflow, electrical components, refrigerant performance, and other conditions that can affect comfort and reliability.

When It’s More Than An AC Repair

Repair Or Replace?

A major repair doesn't automatically mean you need a new system. The right decision depends on more than age alone, including what failed, the condition of the rest of the system, repair cost, and how well the equipment has been performing.

If you're weighing whether to repair your existing system or put that money toward replacement, we can help you understand the factors that matter.
Repair vs. Replace: What Should I Consider?

When The Problem Is Bigger Than The Equipment

Sometimes the air conditioner is working exactly as designed, but the house still isn't comfortable. Poor airflow, duct problems, excess humidity, ventilation issues, or controls can all affect how well the system performs. When the symptoms don't match a straightforward equipment failure, we look beyond the AC to find out what else may be contributing to the problem.
